All too often the joys of the holiday season are lost to the stress that they can often bring to the body and spirit. Sometimes shopping for the perfect gift can get overwhelming. Other times it may be the over indulgence of food and alcohol. For others, it can be knowing that the holiday isn’t going to be spent with loved ones. No matter what the reason, trivial or serious, sometimes the holidays lose that magical feeling.

How can you handle the stress? First, recognize that stress is causing a problem for you. Second, identify what is causing the stress in your life. Once your factors are understood, it will be easier to develop a plan for coping with stress in a healthier way.

If stress is completely overwhelming you, professional assistance may be necessary to break the cycle. For most of us, a few simple changes in our lives can make a world of difference with dealing with stress.

Professional massage therapy is one way to deal with stress in a positive way. Massage therapy activates the nervous system and provides deep rest and relaxation. Because it induces this feeling, it strengthens the immune system and can improve overall health.

If you have never had a massage before, don’t be stressed about the session. Talk with friends, family or coworkers to get a referral for someone in your area. Call the therapist and ask what their rate is, if you will go to their office or if they will come to you, what types of massage they offer, or any other question you would like to have answered. Don’t be embarrassed! The therapist wants the session to be perfect for you. Generally, you can even discuss the type of music you would like to hear!

During your session, typically you will asked to undress to your comfort level. Again, please do not let this deter you from enjoying the benefits of massage. Some clients do not undress at all, while others undress fully. In either case, you will be draped with a sheet or towel at all times and your privacy will be completely respected. Typically, the session will last for an hour. Your therapist will check in with you often. It is important to the therapist that you are comfortable in every way. Your only job during the session is to relax and enjoy the relief from stress.

After your session you will be asked to relax for a few moments. The therapist will leave the room to give you some privacy to dress and collect your thoughts. Some therapists will offer you a beverage or small snack, others will simply remind you to drink plenty of water that day. Regardless, you will leave feeling wonderful.
